BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY

The fact that the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound has an ancient origin is confirmed by the results of studying the remains of dogs found during excavations carried out in the Ivolginsky district of Buryatia (Hun settlement), on the outskirts of the city of Ulan-Ude. Scientists have established that the origin of these dogs is much older than the Tibetans, which gives rise to doubts about the established opinion about the origin of many breeds of dogs only from Tibetans.

The range of these dogs in Russia is the Republic of Buryatia (until July 7, 1958 referred to as the Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic), part of the Trans-Baikal Territory (adjacent to Mongolia and Buryatia), part of the Aginsky Buryat Okrug, part of the Ust-Orda Okrug, part of the Irkutsk region, some areas Tuva, Kazakhstan (Semipalatinsk region), Mongolia, China (Inner Mongolia region), Tibet.

Enclaves have been found in rugged places in Siberia where dogs matching this description live in settlements.

The dogs were entered in the Stud Book of Russia in March 2000, they have stamps and pedigree documents issued by the Russian Cynological Federation. The breed standard of the Buryat-Mongolian Wolfhound (Khotosho, Bankhar) was registered in the RKF in July 2006.

The initiators, authors of the revival of this breed and its unifying name were cynologists-specialists in breeding - Teregulova Marika (President of the Baikal Cynological Federation, Chairman of the Republican Club of Pedigree Dog Breeding "Amgalan" of the Republic of Belarus, head of the Buryat Republican Club of Service Dog Breeding DOSAAF) and Batov Nikolai, head of " Club of Domestic Breeds of Dogs" at ROKPS "Amgalan". From the end of the 80s of the XX century, they organized and conducted expeditions to Mongolia, Buryatia, the districts and regions adjacent to it, studied the data of archaeological excavations, legends, Buddhist documents, on the basis of which the breed standard was developed.

In the city of Ulan-Ude, in the nursery of the RKF "Property of the Republic of Buryatia" there is a tribal core and the founders of the Buryat-Mongols of Russia. Here, as well as in the Ivolginsky datsan (for more than five years) of the Buddhist traditional Sangha of Russia (Republic of Buryatia, Ivolginsky district, Verkhnyaya Ivolga village, datsan), there is a kennel that breeds and restores dogs of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound breed.

USAGE

Since ancient times, it has been used as a sacred dog at Buddhist monasteries, as a dog for guarding (not grazing) herds of cattle, camels, flocks of sheep, as well as dwellings (farmsteads) of the Buryats and aimaks of the Mongols. The dog is currently used as a security and sentry, companion and bodyguard, in search of people in emergency situations. The Buryats and Mongols often used these dogs for hunting.

GENERAL FORM

Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound / Hotosho, bankhar - a dog above average and large growth, strong-rough type of constitution, with strong bones and strong relief muscles. The skin is thick but elastic, often forming a dewlap on the neck and wrinkles on the forehead when the ears are pricked up.

The height at the withers is greater than or equal to the height at the rump. In young dogs, slight high rearing is allowed.

This breed is characterized by late maturation. Dogs are considered fully formed by 3-4 years (some males by 5 years).

DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT

Height at withers: males - not less than 74 cm, females - not less than 66 cm.

LIMITATIONS: allowed, with harmonious development, males up to 72 cm and females up to 64 cm.

FAULTS: males below 72 cm, females below 64 cm.

The parameters indicated in the standard were not chosen by chance: practice has shown that the dimensions largely determine the status of the dog - individuals that have a height at the withers less than specified do not have the status necessary for work, and, accordingly, the necessary courage and ability to repulse the enemy - two-legged or four-legged, threatening the owner or his property.

SEXUAL DIMORPHISM

Pronounced - males are much larger and more massive than females.

LIMITATIONS: Slight deviations from the sexual type, bitches in the male type.

FAULTS: Males in bitch type.

EXPLANATION:

The difference in size is not just a tribute to established stereotypes, but an urgent need: a bitch in male frets, as a rule, claims a high status and is often reluctant to mate. And the "geography" of the location of the genitals is such that with an equal height at the withers, the genitals of the bitch are too high for the male, which often leads to the need for the intervention of the instructor.

FEATURES OF BEHAVIOR

The type of GNI is strong, balanced, mobile. A calm, wary attitude towards an outsider is characteristic, with a calm behavior thereof. Defensive reaction - in active form.

LIMITATIONS: Lethargy, gullibility, excessive excitability.

FAULTS: Cowardice, unbridled aggressiveness, hysteria.

EXPLANATION:

From the above, it follows that the BMW is a pronounced sanguine person. In addition, it is unusual for this breed to act "preemptively" - that is, if there is no provocation from a stranger to the dog, it does not try to attack first, without ceasing to control the actions of the "observation object".

In many ways, this behavior is determined by the type of constitution - dogs of light build gravitate towards excessive excitability, while heavy, overweight dogs, on the contrary, are prone to excessive phlegm.

COAT

The coat is straight, coarse, with a soft thick undercoat. On the head and front of the legs, the hair is short and close fitting.

Dogs are divided into three types of coat. All three types of dogs are subject to intense shedding in the summer.

  • Long-haired - with an elongated outer and guard hair. long hair on the neck it forms a “mane”, on the back sides of the legs - “feathers” and “trousers”. Long hair covering the tail on all sides makes it thick and fluffy.
  • Intermediate - dogs with a shorter outer coat and slightly developed prominent dressing coat, the tail has a characteristic dewlap.
  • Short-haired - dogs are covered with thick, short hair, with a well-developed undercoat, which in winter is longer than the length of the outer hair. "Mane" and "trousers" are absent, there may be a slight "suspension" on the tail.

LIMITATIONS: Insufficiently elastic, "rolled" undercoat, wavy hair on the back and croup.

FAULTS: Curly coat, coat without undercoat

EXPLANATION:

Hotosho wool - the main protection against external influences - perfectly copes with this task, protecting the dog from any precipitation: from rain to snow. In addition, the correct coat has a tendency to self-clean - foreign impurities from thorns to clay easily slide off it.

Considering the stubborn reluctance of representatives of our breed to use the booths, it is not difficult to imagine how quickly the health of a dog will be shaken, whose coat does not have the desired density or easily falls off, because mats easily get wet and dry for a very long time.

Another feature is the tendency to intense seasonal molting, when even a long-haired dog looks short-haired, if you do not pay attention to the dewlap on the tail.

COLOR

Black and tan (with markings from copper to almost white), which is the main color in the breed, black, red (from fawn to fiery red), zoned and tan.

The presence of white marks is allowed: on the chest, not protruding beyond the shoulder joint, as well as on the forelimbs - no higher than the middle of the forearm, on the hind limbs - no higher than the metatarsus. A small white "tassel" on the tail is allowed.

FLAW: undesirable - the presence of a white mark on only one forelimb (a certain symmetry must be observed), specks on a white background, brown color.

FAULTS: Pied, spotted in any combination.

EXPLANATION:

Dogs with asymmetrically colored forelimbs, namely with one white paw, are recommended for culling under the bitch, as undesirable in further breeding use.

Practice has shown that piebald and spotted dogs have more dependent and indecisive behavior than standard colored ones. An interesting fact is that bitches themselves try to get rid of such puppies, they either crush them or push them away. There is a known case when a bitch simply drowned a piebald puppy in a bowl of water.

The explanation was made by the President of the NCP BMS M.V. Teregulova, but from the point of view of zootechnics and genetics, it has no basis, except for personal aesthetic predilections.

HEAD

Proportionate to general build, with a moderately broad skull and well-developed, well-defined cheekbones. The occipital protuberance is pronounced. The forehead is wide, flat straight (!?) or slightly convex. The transition from the forehead to the muzzle is not long, noticeable, clearly marked by well-defined brow ridges. The muzzle is voluminous with a blunt cut, equal to or somewhat shorter than the skull, parallel to the line of the forehead, well filled in the infraorbital region, wide and deep at the base, almost not tapering towards the nose. Viewed from the front and in profile, it is rectangular in shape. Lower jaw massive, wide, well developed. The lips are thick and close fitting. The nose is large, wide, black, and does not protrude beyond the line of the muzzle.

LIMITATIONS: Lightweight or excessively heavy head, creating a visual imbalance in addition. Light, pointed, upturned muzzle. Slightly convex forehead, protracted transition. Raw lips and eyelids, protruding nose.

FAULTS: Light narrow head, with a sharp muzzle. Markedly downturned or upturned muzzle. Sharp transition from forehead to muzzle. Narrow light lower jaw.

EXPLANATION:

Here it is necessary to mention that there are two intrabreed types in the breed, for simplicity we will call them wide-faced and wedge-headed. To level them, bringing the livestock to complete uniformity, would be a mistake leading to degeneration. From the point of view of biology and zootechnics, it is the presence of intrabreed types that is the key to the progression and viability of the breed.

EARS

Medium size, triangular in shape, medium set - the inner corner of the base of the ear and the fold are on the line of the forehead, visually expanding the cranial part of the head, hanging, slightly rising on the cartilage when the dog is alert. Creases and folds are not rejected.

LIMITATIONS: Ears too light, raised on cartilage, set too high.

EXPLANATION:

With all the loyalty of the standard to creases and folds, their presence is a consequence of rickets. Therefore, they should be considered when choosing a pair.

EYES

Brown - from light, almost yellow, to dark brown, small, oval in shape, straight and wide set. Rough dogs may have a slight drooping of the lower eyelid.

LIMITATIONS: Slightly slanted incision of the eyes, the presence of a cataract.

FAULTS: Oddness, strongly drooping lower eyelids, exposing part of the sclera. Blue eyes

EXPLANATION:

For hotosho, light (from amber yellow to light brown) eyes are not only not a disadvantage, but are also welcome.

TEETH

White, large, well developed, closely adjacent to each other. The incisors at the base are located in one line. Scissor bite, straight.

LIMITATIONS: Teeth not worn according to age, incisors out of line, after 3 years of undershot bite, absence of one P1 at the top or bottom, or absence of the 1st or 2nd M3.

FAULTS: Small, rare, underdeveloped teeth, absence of more than one P1 at the top or bottom + absence of 2 M3 in the set. Undershot or overshot with waste.

NECK

Powerful, approximately equal in length to the length of the head, set low, with or without dewlap.

FAULTS: Long, sagging, humped loins.

CRUP

Broad, muscular, somewhat sloping.

LIMITATIONS: Insufficiently muscular, excessively sloping croup.

FAULTS: Narrow, short, sharply sloping croup.

TAIL

Set on high, in a calm state lowered down, in movement the dog can hold the tail above the back in a ring, crescent-shaped or slightly throw it over the back. There may be a "hook" at the end of the tail

FOREQUARTERS

Seen from the front, straight and parallel to each other. The shoulder blades are long, obliquely set. The shoulders are muscular, the forearms are straight and long. The pasterns are moderately short, set vertically or with a slight inclination in static. Springy in motion. The length of the forelegs to the elbow is more than half the height at the withers.

LIMITATIONS: Slight deviations in the angles of the shoulder - scapular joints, somewhat shortened or elongated forearms, slight spread, excessively inclined pasterns.

FAULTS: Straight or sharp shoulders, curved forearms, very weak pasterns, pronounced markup.

HIND LIMB

When viewed from behind, straight and parallel to each other, set slightly wider than the front. The thigh is wide, with well-developed muscles, the lower legs are moderately long, the hocks are well-defined, the metatarsus is of medium length, massive, vertically set. The set of the hind legs is straight or somewhat drawn out. In movement, the dog places its legs wide, slightly turning the metatarsus.

LIMITATIONS: When viewed from behind, in static position, a slight deviation from parallelism: a slight convergence of the hocks, a somewhat narrow set, insufficiently pronounced angles of the hocks.

FAULTS: Proximity in the hocks, sharp straight rearing, saber set, strong high rearing.

PAWS

Large, round or oval, arched, tight, webbed and with long hair between the toes. Arrived fingers are desirable to stop.

LIMITATIONS: Soft, loose paws, dewclaws not removed.

LIMITATIONS: Minor deviations from the correct movements. Insufficient free extension of the joints.

FAULTS: Bound, heavy movements. Uncorrectable amble.

The history of the origin of the breed

The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound is the oldest breed of guard and shepherd dogs. To this day, dog breeders cannot come to a consensus and decide who appeared first: the Tibetan Great Dane or the Mongol. Unfortunately, the breed is little known outside of Mongolia and Buryatia. But sometimes these dogs can be found in Siberia, Tibet and China.

Despite its thousand-year history, the breed is recognized exclusively by the Russian Cynological Federation, and this happened only in 2000. And the breed standard was registered even later, in 2006.

The purpose of the breed

These large and shaggy dogs were originally sacred dogs at Buddhist monasteries. They also took part in various rituals of local shamans.
The second name of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound is hotosho, or hotoche, which translates as “the dog of the courtyard”, or “the dog guarding the courtyard”. This sensitive and attentive guards who will not let any of the outsiders pass by and will definitely inform the owners about them.

At home, the Mongols are widely used to protect not only houses, but also herds. The translation of the prefix “hoto” from the Western Mongolian dialect, which means “pen”, speaks of their shepherd qualities. That is, hotoshi are also used by shepherds to drive the herd.

Developed intuition allows you to use this wolfhound in search and rescue activities. And the scent and dexterity make the dog a good hunter. Quite often it was possible to meet hotosho in the garrisons, where they carried out guard duty, and in their free time carefully nursed the officers' children. And also this faithful companion, bodyguard and big four-legged friend who faithfully serves the whole family.

Description of the nature of the breed

The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhounds look like lazy and clumsy bumpkins. But in fact, they are easy-going and very mobile and playful. Hotosho are balanced And they don't have mood swings.

These are big good-natured people who can sometimes be too trusting and therefore tend to misperceive the real intentions of outsiders. Although initially they are wary and distrustful of strangers.

Thanks to the same kindness, they make wonderful sweet and caring nannies. They treat other animals like real shepherds, closely watching their behavior. The Mongols do not have a habit of conflict, and they will never be the first to sort things out.

The predominant behavioral trait of the Mongolian wolfhound is curiosity and attention. They quickly notice the slightest changes in the world around them, which they will certainly hasten to inform the owners about.

Hotosho spontaneous, playful and have a very subtle sense of humor, which are sometimes able to bring to heart attack those who are not familiar with their demeanor. They like to corner future playmates by darting past them with a rather intimidating look.

Unobtrusive Buryats will always find a place for themselves next to the owner, even in a small room, and they will do it in such a way as not to disturb anyone with their presence. They feel comfortable in any conditions and, with the right maintenance, can be close to their beloved owner, even in a cramped apartment. Although they are not designed for this.

How to choose a puppy

Hotosho puppy looks like a well-fed teddy bear with four eyes. And all because this breed has bright eyebrows on a black muzzle. A healthy and well-groomed stout is covered with thick and shiny hair. Hanging ears should be clean, and the nose should be damp and cold.

The exception is puppies who have just woken up. An elastic, but soft and not swollen tummy indicates that on this moment the puppy has no worms. Toddlers should actively frolic and explore new objects and strangers with curiosity.

If you look at the parents, you can guess what your pet will be like when it grows up. By the way, it is better to acquire a Mongolian at the age of three months. Like many large breeds, the hotosho needs a little more time to become independent and absorb all the skills that a mother can pass on to them.

Wherever you buy a puppy, find out if he has received the necessary vaccinations. If necessary, do not delay a visit to the veterinary clinic for vaccination. If you are purchasing a purebred puppy with a pedigree, then check for documents and a brand on the dog's body.

Dog names

For hotosho, nicknames like Sharik and Tuzik are hardly suitable. These should be names that your pet could wear with grandeur, and you would proudly pronounce them. You can teach a puppy to a nickname quite quickly if you pronounce it at the time when you are going to feed him or treat him with something tasty.

Try to give your pet a name that is easy to pronounce, which will make it easier for the dog to understand. Nicknames such as Zangar, Des, Darman, Alva, Elba, Terra, Khan, Sheikh, Khatis, Aina, Gerda and so on are suitable for the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound.

Once a year, before the start of summer, hotosho with any type of coat have a very abundant molt. Wool literally peels off them in layers. Daily combing and plucking the coat by hand (manual trimming) will help to give the dog a proper look during this period.

Bathe such a dog once or twice a year. Hotosho will enjoy this procedure in natural waters with pleasure, as they are excellent swimmers. With special attention, you need to treat the hanging ears of the dog, which you need regularly.

Although the Mongols can get along in an apartment, it is still recommended to bring them to private houses with their own yard. So the dog will feel much freer and more comfortable. Hotosho should not be put on a chain, for this there are other breeds that are more intended for this. Instead, make your pet an aviary with a canopy and a spacious booth.

The final physical growth of the Mongolian stops only closer to four years. For normal muscle development throughout the entire period of formation, the dog requires sufficient physical activity.

Possible health problems

Since the breed has not undergone human intervention and forced selection, the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhounds have no health problems and their immunity is able to resist many diseases. But with overfeeding or excessive exercise, quite serious illness elbow or hip joints, that is .

Its sign may be limping and pain in the paws. The only way to confirm the diagnosis is to take an x-ray. If it is bad to follow the ears, then it may appear, about which the dog will immediately let you know, starting and trying to scratch the sore ear. When the form is started, an unpleasant odor appears from the ears.

Puppy and adult dog food

Many problems with the health and general condition of the dog arise from malnutrition. Some owners strive to treat their pet with tasty, in their opinion, smoked meats or sweets. This categorically impossible make. And also you can’t turn a dog into a pig, dropping all the waste to it, which sometimes may not be entirely fresh. And they even forget to feed.

normal, proper nutrition implies regularity and balance. At least a third of the volume should be occupied by protein products, namely lean meat (veal, chicken, beef or turkey), including offal or sea fish. The rest of the volume is filled with carbohydrates, which include cereals and vegetables. Sour-milk products, as well as boiled eggs, will be useful in the dog's diet.

You need to feed an adult dog twice a day, and puppies more often, depending on. Try to place the food bowl on a hill and preferably at chest level. Also provide your pet with a container of clean water. As a treat, it is more useful to use bones or apples.

Briefly about training

Hotosho are smart and give in pretty quickly. But sometimes they tend to be lazy and stubborn. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to turn training into a game. And also the whole process of education should be more like friendly agreements.

So it will be easier for you, and it will be more interesting for the dog to perceive the requirements. After the pet has completed the commands do not forget to praise him and treat him with something. You should not raise your voice against the Buryats, much less use physical force. From this, he will simply stop trusting you.

You can take with your Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound such special courses as security guard or search and rescue. As a rule, dog handlers speak flatteringly about such students, who are able to easily absorb information and remember lessons.

Advantages and disadvantages

The good-natured Buryat-Mongolian wolfhounds are only in appearance so formidable and intimidating. When you get to know each other better, you will find out how affectionate and devoted. Don't be afraid to leave them small child, and when he grows up, he can easily control his big four-legged friend.

At any age, hotosho gladly respond to the offer to play. They mobile and dexterous which you can't say right away. Even in relation to other dogs, they do not bully, but try to involve them in the game. True sometimes in a rather strange way.

These dogs are easy to care for and picky about food and conditions. Choosing for themselves one leader, they, nevertheless, faithfully and obediently serve all, who belongs to the host family. Buryats are very easy to educate and teach all the necessary commands.

True, sometimes you can stumble upon stubbornness and laziness. For many centuries, these dogs have become accustomed to being close to a person and being his reliable friend and bodyguard.

With photos. Today we will talk about one of them. It will be about the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound. What are these dogs? Are they big or not? What do they look like? You will find out the answers to these questions if you read the article in full.

It is possible that you even met such large dogs somewhere. Breeds, whose name you might not know, interested you, and you decided to learn more about these unusual dogs.

Description of the dog

The Mongolian wolfhound is the best known in Tibet and naturally in Mongolia. True, this breed is not recognized by the FCI. On the territory of the above states, the dog is revered as a sacred animal by Tibetan lamas.

It has long been believed that such dogs accompanied the dead on their last journey, protecting them from evil. Sometimes a dog is called a four-eyed dog. Why? Because of the bizarre color around the eyes: in place of the eyebrows, it’s like another pair of eyes, only not black, but red.

Mongolian large dogs

Breeds, whose names may not mean anything to Russian amateur dog breeders, are in fact widely known among cynologists all over the world. This wolfhound is not very common in the world, but these dogs are very popular among the inhabitants of Mongolia. To breed the breed, they used the genotype. To this day, research by specialists in relation to this variety of dogs has not been completed.

However, even without this, it is clear that the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound, whose photo you see in our article, has many good qualities not inferior to popular breeds.

This dog is independent, although devoted to his owner, clearly follows his orders. The Mongolian wolfhound has a specific character: the dog loves to be in contact with people, while not favoring those who are not part of the usual environment. The dog lends itself perfectly to training, learns commands well, is able to protect both property and the owner himself. To protect something or someone, a dog can use its teeth, although this happens very rarely, since a representative of this breed prefers only to detain an intruder before the owner arrives, who will figure out what to do with him.

Usually such a dog is not the first to attack dogs, let alone people.

Despite the fact that the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound has a responsible and serious nature, he does not mind having fun playing with family members.

Such dogs love to swim in ponds, they are excellent swimmers. Periodically, the wolfhound requires a little attention from the owner. During such periods, the dog can behave like a small puppy.

Appearance

By standard, this dog is considered large. On average, a male of this breed reaches 75 cm at the withers. Females are about the same, you rarely see a bitch below 65 cm. The weight of a representative of the breed can reach up to seventy-five kilograms.

Residents of Mongolia often call such dogs "khotosho" (yard wolf). Despite the fact that such a dog is of impressive size, his psyche is balanced.

The representatives of the breed have both the body and the head are wide, very massive. The muzzle is well set. Withers and deep chest are two distinct features of the breed. The limbs of such a dog are powerful and muscular, as is the body. The coat is thick, there is an undercoat (also thick).

The advantage of the breed is that the coat of such a dog has water-repellent properties. If a Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound that has just come out of the water shakes himself off a couple of times, then he will be practically dry. Another advantage of the breed is that the wool of the representatives does not gather into tangles. This makes these dogs a little easier to care for.

The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound comes in different colors: brown, black and tan, wolf and red with white markings.

Characteristics of the representatives of the breed

Although during the choice between the owner and someone else, the dog, of course, will choose the first one.

Puppies of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound can carry out some commands. From early childhood, you need to drive such a dog throughout the entire territory of the economy, so that the baby at such a young age understands that he will need to be protected in the future.

Representatives of this breed accurately distinguish between animals from their own and foreign territories. If you keep a dog in the yard, then know that he may ask to come into your house. At the same time, such a dog will try to behave well, so as not to embarrass anyone with its presence. He will find a quiet place for himself. Note that the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound will never try to drive any other animal off the sofa or rug.

Such a dog respects the owner, but he will not allow screams and misbehavior towards his person. Do not think that the dog will snap or rush at the owner, he will do otherwise. The wolfhound will simply show his donkey stubbornness, achieving what he wants to the last, ignoring any orders.

This kind of situation is more of a rarity than a rule. With the right treatment, the Mongolian wolfhound will listen to the head of the family without question. And the dog will be faithful, of course, to other family members, even children.

Although in relation to the child, the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound (photo above), can be especially quick-witted. After all, kids can not always objectively assess the safety of their own actions, so such a dog can be assigned as a guard even to the most inveterate tomboy.

For example, if a child goes deeper into the water, the wolfhound will push the baby ashore. Note that at this time, neither the orders of the child, nor the screams can stop him. And, of course, it will not be difficult for him to pull a drowning child out of the water. Based on this, we can conclude that representatives of this breed are excellent nannies for children of all ages.

Note that such dogs have an excellent sense of humor, so they periodically play pranks on their owners. It is also impossible not to say that the breed is perfect for country houses. This dog will be an excellent watchdog. He will be able to protect the house and territory when you are away.

Such a dog is extremely curious at any age, both in puppyhood and in adulthood. Most likely, he will perceive a growling dog not as an enemy, but as an object for study.

Maintenance and care of representatives of the breed

The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound does not require special care. Since the dog has a thick coat, the pet needs to be combed out periodically so that it has a well-groomed appearance. In addition, combing helps the animal get rid of excess hair during the molting period.

These large dogs are unpretentious to the conditions of detention. They are not afraid of severe frosts. But if you plan to keep such a dog on the street, you need to make a booth for him to protect him from the rain.

Features of feeding such dogs

The dog is unpretentious even in food. Representatives of the breed are omnivores, but they, like other dogs, require a balanced diet.

This is especially necessary in the first three or four years of a dog's life. It was at this time that the exterior of the dog was formed. If the diet is not correct, then the animal may develop dysplasia.

Of course, such a dog can be fed with ready-made food (it is advisable to take premium). Although experts came to the conclusion that the composition of the Mongolian wolfhound is best suited for products of the brand "Nutro Choice".

Supplements for full development

If you plan to feed such a dog with natural food, then, of course, you need to think about vitamin and mineral supplements. Now there is a large selection of such products. What to choose? There is a special fortified complex called "8 in 1". This supplement is available for dogs of all ages and sizes. For a Buryat, such a complex is just right. Although in this matter you can additionally consult a veterinarian.

The rate of physical activity for this dog

Note that for the health of such a dog, regular, and increased loads are needed. If the muscles of the Mongolian wolfhound do not receive such training, then the dog, no matter how well it is fed, will still remain frail and sick. In addition, inactivity can affect the change in the character of the dog for the worse. Therefore, experts advise keeping such a dog in the yard so that he has the opportunity to run, jump, chase someone.

The Mongolian wolfhound does not fall into the category of those dogs that travel to exhibitions. Note that it does not differ in any external features. But on the other hand, he is a reliable friend who can be trusted not only with the protection of property, but also with the care of children. If you treat this dog well and with love, then it will be devoted to you with all its heart.

Price for one representative of the breed

How much does a Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound cost? The average price is forty thousand rubles per puppy, although it all depends on the region in which you buy it. Also, the final cost is affected by how famous the parents of the puppy are.

A small conclusion

Whatever breed of dog you choose, be it a Mongolian wolfhound or anyone else, the main thing is to take into account the characteristics of its breed. In simple terms - it is not necessary to make a hunting dog out of a guard dog. Let the animal realize its natural qualities, and it will thank you with faithful service.

The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound is a dog breed that can claim the status of the oldest on earth. Reasons to think so were given by excavations that were carried out in the Ivolginsky district of Buryatia. This is a completely native breed. Man almost did not have a hand in its derivation, skills were formed over the centuries. People only selected the most adequate and strongest individuals. This type of wolfhound is most loved in the countries of Central Asia.

Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound: description of the breed

Another name for this breed is hotosho. One of the options for translating this word from Mongolian into Russian is "a dog that guards the yard." The breed is also called differently, for example, hotosho nokhoy.

The Buryat wolfhound is used in many areas: to guard the house, as a hunting companion and even as a children's nanny.

Legends about hotosho

These dogs often guarded Buddhist temples. In general, the giant has a special role in Buddhism, where it is considered sacred. According to beliefs, the ancient ancestor of hotosho, the female Sarama, served as an assistant to the god Indra. She was tan. Therefore, there is a belief that due to the symmetrically located red spots on the forehead, these dogs have not one, but two pairs of eyes. And the Buryats believe that the animal brings happiness to the house. According to another legend, a hotosho with the same color saved humanity from starvation by begging the Buddha to keep the grains on the ears.

rebirth

Until the 20th century, the Buryat wolfhounds almost disappeared. Until the 80s, their factory breeding was not accepted. N. Batov and M. Trigulova took up the resuscitation of this type of dog. They organized research expeditions to where the animals once lived. As a result, a single standard was formed. Requirements for BMW were registered in 2006. Six years earlier, the breed was included in the Stud Book, although international recognition has not yet been achieved.

The standards allow three colors:

  • black;
  • ginger;
  • black and tan.

Less desirable colors are agouti and mottled.

Development, puberty

The puppy matures quite late. Growth in height stops only by 2 years, and physical formation - at least 4 years, or even later.

Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound puppies

Attention! Late maturation does not affect protective qualities. Even a puppy is ready to serve on a par with adults.

Females reach puberty by 2 years, males - by 2.5 years. For mating to be successful, it is advisable to choose an older partner. Knitting is organized on the "male" territory. If the male is massive, then his partner may need support.

Character

Hotosho are characterized as sanguine. In their reviews, breeders note that a sudden change of mood is unusual for their temper. At the same time, representatives of the breed have both positive and negative qualities. Valuable features include balance, devotion, unpretentiousness in content. The owners of such dogs declare that their pets are deprived of unmotivated. These are born guards who have a highly developed intellect. Among the shortcomings are waywardness and excessive independence. Hotosho Nokhoi are strongly attached to the house and do not tolerate moving.

Bringing a puppy to the courtyard, the owner introduces the new guard to the territory and other pets. The dog takes care of each resident of the house and monitors whether he is in place. Despite its formidable appearance, the Mongolian wolfhound will not supplant the weaker member of the family. Breeders say that these dogs swim as well as Newfoundlands and are no less playful than Labradors.

Reference. The Buryat wolfhound is human-oriented. Therefore, animals need close contact with the owner, which is not limited only to the feeding procedure.

Under no circumstances do they cease to fulfill their natural duties. If the taiga dwellers took representatives of the breed with them on hikes, then even during many hours of halts they were completely confident in the safety of their property. If a stranger or other object appears in the field of view, the dog is wary of him, but does not lose his composure. The actions of the guest are always under the control of the guard, who is always confident in his own abilities. Unless provoked, the animal will not attack first.

Features of maintenance and care

Although the Mongolian Shepherd will find a place for itself even in a cramped apartment, a private yard is more suitable for it, but without a leash. Thick wool, which overgrows her body in the cold season, does not freeze even in cold weather. But at the same time, the dog must have an indoor aviary with warm bedding.

Buryat diver needs to provide sufficient physical activity. Without this, the necessary muscle mass, and even with good nutrition, the pet looks thin.

In general, care does not require much work from the owner. It is enough to check the condition of the ears once every 14 days, and if necessary, remove the earwax. To do this, use a bandage swab soaked in vegetable oil. To improve ventilation inside the ear, you can remove excess hair from it. If the puppy was born with dewclaws (fifth) fingers, they are amputated as soon as possible. If the rudiment is ignored, the risk of injury and disability increases.

There is no special care for the eyes. regularly from a young age. Special veterinary pastes have been developed for dogs. In stores you can buy the following hygiene products:

  • Trixie - care set oral cavity, which includes paste and two brushes;
  • "Stop, problem";
  • 8in1 DDS Canine Tooth Paste and others.

Moult

This dog has a special coat. In winter, they are covered with thick wool, which sheds by summer, becoming almost smooth-haired. So the body adapted to the climate of Transbaikalia. Therefore, a strong molt begins in the off-season, especially in the spring. Then the hair from the dog comes off in layers. To speed up the process, hotosho are combed out with a special comb or brush. The procedure helps the animal get rid of dead hair and accelerates the growth of new ones. A furminator may be needed for the ear behind the coat.

Attention! The Furminator must not be used if skin there are injuries, ulcers, abrasions, other injuries.

The coat of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound has water-repellent properties. To dry off after bathing, it is enough for him to shake himself several times. Another feature is that they almost never form on wool due to the hard axial hair.

Bathing

The number of water procedures depends on the place of residence of the wolfhound. So, when keeping a pet in an apartment, they wash it once a month. If he lives in an aviary, then 2-3 baths a year are enough, for which they choose warm time, for example, late spring and early autumn.

Nutrition

The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound is unpretentious in food. In most cases, breeders choose natural feeding. The meat component makes up 2/3 of the diet. All lean meats are acceptable: poultry - chicken, turkey, beef, offal. The product is preliminarily scalded and frozen. Cereals are mixed with the protein part - boiled rice, buckwheat. The daily portion of meat for large individuals can reach 1.5 kg.

Also in the diet include other low-fat foods:

  • sea fish;
  • fermented milk products of low fat content - cottage cheese, kefir, yogurt;
  • any vegetables except tomatoes;
  • raw chicken eggs no more than 2 times a week.

Puppies are fed 4 times, adults - 2 times a day.

Attention! Feeding is carried out no later than 1.5 hours before the walk and no earlier than 1.5 hours after it ends. Otherwise, the dog is threatened with volvulus of the stomach.

Ready feed

Holistic feeds are most preferred. For the most big dogs produce the following products:

  • Pro Pac Ultimates Large Breed is a complete glucosamine and chondroitin product for musculoskeletal health;
  • Trainer Fitness3 Adult Medium and Maxi - for dogs prone to food, the food contains goji berries and pineapple extract;
  • Earthborn Holistic Meadow Feast is designed for pets with sensitive digestive system, the composition includes extracts from cranberries, blueberries, apples, rosemary.

Diseases

Hotosho, as an aboriginal breed, is devoid of genetic ailments. However, it is characterized by pathologies and anomalies that affect large dogs. These are mainly pathologies of the musculoskeletal system, digestive and cardiovascular systems:

  1. hip joints (DTBS). The disease is congenital and cannot be completely cured. The problem manifests itself only by the first year of life or a little later. Rapid weight gain during adolescence places stress on the joints.
  2. Heart failure. In order to detect pathology in time, it is necessary to regularly show the pet to the veterinarian and do an ultrasound of the heart.
  3. Inflammation and dystrophic changes, fractures of the limbs. Prevention is feeding dogs with food containing chondroitin and glucosamine. High jumping exercises are contraindicated for dogs under one year old. Such activity often leads to cracks in the bones, dislocations and sprains. Physical exercise should be light.
  4. Bloating and volvulus of the stomach. After eating a large portion of food, the stomach increases in volume, the dog has shortness of breath, the animal groans. When the stomach is twisted, urgent surgical intervention is necessary, otherwise the dog dies in a few hours.

Attention! Inversion of the stomach provokes overfeeding. Therefore, it is more useful to give smaller portions and feed the dog only after a walk.

Regular examinations will prevent acute heart failure in wolfhounds

Education and training

Beginners will not be able to cope with the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound. This task can only be done by an experienced, strong-willed mentor. With proper upbringing and training, a balanced and docile animal grows out of a puppy.

You can find more information about the methods and methods of training dogs of various breeds on our website.

The main tool in education is communication, encouragement when the task is completed correctly. If the pet has committed a misconduct, then the owner expresses dissatisfaction and distracts him to the right behavior.

Attention! For hotosho, the variant of strict training is unacceptable. One of the character traits of this dog is independence, therefore it is not capable of unquestioning obedience. Education remains the only acceptable method.

The pet remembers commands quickly. But in order for them to be fulfilled, the dog must be interested. This is only possible if the pet trusts the owner and respects him. In the process of training with a dog, they talk, tell, explain. It is not necessary to train an animal specifically for protection, since all the necessary qualities are inherent in the genes.

Physical violence in training is also unacceptable. The pet is offended and goes on the defensive. It is not easy to win trust again later, and often it is completely impossible. But even with this attitude, the animal does not attack the owner. The Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound does not participate in exhibitions and will not amuse the pride of the owner, who dreams of diplomas and medals. But, having established a trusting relationship with this big animal, you can get a faithful and devoted friend.

The content of the article:

Buryat Mongolian wolfhounds hotosho are considered sacred animals in their homeland. They are imperturbable and calm in any situation - even if manna from heaven falls from heaven. But, sometimes dogs still remind others that they are vigilant, guard dogs. Some incredible power comes from hotosho. They do not come across as intimidating animals, but even from a distance they can command respect. Dogs fascinate with their philosophically human attitude to life. They are dreamers and wonderful helpers for people. They should not be approached as companion dogs, they are real campaigners.

The appearance of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhound breed

Buryat-Mongolian wolfhounds or buryat-mongolian wolfhounds were bred exclusively in Buddhist monasteries. Of course, they performed some security functions, but the most important thing was different. These dogs have tan marks above the eye sockets - yellow eyebrows. Buddhists still believe that this is another pair of eyes that allows you to see through a person.

Such a dog can determine good man, or bad. Zoroastrians also treated dogs with great respect, which had a so-called second pair of eyes. They believed that even if the dog is sleeping, she still sees what is happening around. There was another belief. When a person was dying, a dog was allowed near his body, which lay down beside him and did not let evil spirits near the deceased.

The remains of the Buryat-Mongolian wolfhounds were discovered during excavations of the Hun settlement. This is the Ivolginsky district of Buryatia. These finds confirm that the hotosho are even more ancient than the Tibetan mastiffs.

The aboriginal Buryat line of dogs was distributed on the territory of Buryatia. Buryat dogs have never herded sheep, they mostly guarded the house. Among the Buryats, it was considered a bad omen if a dog grazed sheep. People said that then the male power would leave the family. Such dogs are distinguished by thriftiness, because they left the house and children on them, in addition, they have serious security working qualities.

Mongolian dogs are very similar to Buryat dogs. Because in the thirties of the last century, the Shenekhen Buryats left that territory of China for inner Mongolia and naturally took their beloved dogs with them.

We owe the revival of hotosho to the childhood dream of Nikolai Batov. His grandfather was returning from the Austrian captivity, having passed the First world war. Approaching his native Verkhneudinsk, as Ulan-Ude used to be called, he was attacked by wolves. He was saved by a huge black dog with yellow eyebrows. This story was told to little Kolya Batov by his mother. Grandfather died at the front of the Great patriotic war. Nikolai decided to resurrect the dog of his childhood dream and imagine, he succeeded!

For the restoration of the pedigree line of these dogs, people need to be grateful to Marika Teregulova and Nikolai Batov. If not for these two people and many of their associates and followers, we would never have seen hotosho. After all, this breed was considered almost extinct, lost. The hard work of these people brought excellent results.

This dog has many names. It is called "durben nyudetey hara nokhoy" in translation from Buryat - a black dog with four eyes. It is also called the “dog of the Huns”, but the correct name is “hotosho” or “hotoche”, which means a yard wolf.

Once upon a time, in ancient times, it was these dogs that looked after, guarded, and, if necessary, nursed children. Men grazed cattle or went hunting. Women were engaged in household chores, and hotosho made sure that the children did not go beyond the territory they could see. If the fool flirted, then the dog approached him and gently pushed him back with his nose, towards his home. This is probably why the people of Buryatia at the genetic level have a respectful, and even gentle attitude towards these furry giants.
