The Russian Statistical Yearbook is the most comprehensive annual publication of the Federal State Statis-
tics Service (Rosstat), reflecting the phenomena and processes occurring in the economic, social and political
life of the country.
In connection with the growing demand from foreign users for the official statistical information on socio-
economic situation of the Russian Federation and also using the experience of national statistical services of
other countries, the Federal State Statistics Service for the first time prepared an edition of the yearbook, which
presents statistical data simultaneously in two languages (Russian and English).
The book was prepared on the basis of data received by state statistics bodies from enterprises, organize-
tions, population via censuses, sample surveys and other forms of statistical observation, data from ministries
and departments of the Russian Federation, as well as materials of international organizations.
This yearbook contains in general the same range of statistical indicators as the previous edition. At the
same time, the book has been supplemented by a number of new tables and indicators allowing to increase
public awareness of the results of statistical observations. Some of the previously published tables are not pre-
sent in this publication.
The yearbook begins with information on the main socio-economic characteristics of the Russian Federation
and the state structure of the Russian Federation. It provides information characterizing the geography and
climate of the Russian Federation, data on the environment, geological exploration and national wealth.
Information on the population, employment and well-being is presented. Special sections are devoted to
The indicators of the system of national accounts, presented in the yearbook, characterize the macroeco-
nomic aspects of the functioning of the Russian economy. One of the sections of the book contains the general
description of enterprises and organizations, information on small and individual entrepreneurship.
A considerable part of the yearbook is devoted to indicators that characterize specific types of economic ac-
tivities - industry, agriculture and forestry, fishing and fish farming, construction, transportation, communications,
activities of organizations serving the population.
The book contains data on the scientific resources of the Russian Federation, R&D results, innovative activi-
ties and information technologies. It provides information on the financial position of organizations, on invest-
ments, prices and tariffs.
One of the yearbook sections is dedicated to foreign economic activities and includes information on foreign
trade in goods and services as well as data on foreign trade prices. The yearbook closing section presents data
on international comparisons of Russia with foreign countries, including data on purchasing power parities
