Recently, eye drops have become quite popular, in which sodium sulfacyl plays the role of the main component. They contain a large amount of sulfacetamide, a substance that is often used in powerful antibacterial drugs, as it effectively fights harmful microorganisms, including those that cause eye damage, and is also safe enough that doctors often prescribe it for young children.

It should be noted that sodium sulfacyl is not an antibiotic, as it has a milder effect. This substance has a bacteriostatic effect, that is, it does not destroy the cell walls of pathogenic microbes, but prevents their reproduction.

Eye drops on the basis of sulfacetamide are prescribed in many cases - in addition to their therapeutic use, they are also used prophylactically, which prevents the development of various diseases.

Instructions for use of the drug contains data that it can be used to combat infectious conjunctivitis. This group of diseases can be caused by various strains:

  • gonococci;
  • chlamydia;
  • shigella;
  • streptococci;
  • staphylococci.

In addition, diseases can be triggered by other bacteria, most of which do not tolerate the effects of sodium sulfacyl very well.

Eye drops also produce a good effect with purulent inflammation, including in children at a very early age. Doctors often prescribe them for newborns who have eye damage from the gonococcal strain - the so-called blennorrhea. In this case, the use of the drug is one of the few ways to achieve a successful cure without causing irreversible changes in the structure of the conjunctiva and cornea.

At the same time, it is worth remembering that at the age of 6 years it is worth using the drug with the lowest concentration of sulfacetamide, which is 20%.

Sulfacyl sodium is also quite often used for the prevention serious illnesses. In this case, eye drops at a concentration of 20% are used when a foreign body enters the eye, which can be represented by sand, soil, insects, or a fragment of various materials.

Instructions for use indicate that timely washing of the eyes and the use of this remedy can prevent the spread of pathogens that inevitably enter the organs of vision even with slight damage. This method of use is especially important for children who can get foreign objects into their eyes during active play.

Standard dosage

Before describing the methods of using drops, it is worth mentioning that two different forms of the drug can be presented in pharmacies, the concentration of sulfacetamide in which is 20% and 30%.

The first type is sometimes also called children's, but in fact, the instructions for use allow adults to bury it, if necessary, for prophylaxis or mild inflammation of the eye membrane.

Sometimes sodium sulfacyl can also be found commercially under an alternative commercial name. - the composition of this drug is completely similar to the original drops and does not have any additional additives.

In acute inflammation of the eyes, including purulent, experts recommend using sodium sulfacyl at a concentration of 30%. In this case, it must be injected into the eyes from 3 to 6 times a day, depending on the severity of the symptoms. It is advisable to apply 2 drops in each affected eye at a time, and take a break of 10-25 seconds between their introduction, which will reduce the intensity of discomfort.

If the indication for use is a mild lesion, then eye drops can also be used at a concentration of 20% - their use is much easier to tolerate by the human body, since they do not cause severe burning and irritation of the conjunctiva.

For prophylaxis, only a 20% concentration is usually used, regardless of the age of the patient. At the same time, sodium sulfacyl must be injected into both eyes, 2 drops each, taking a break between injections of 1-2 minutes - in this case, you will avoid irritation of the membrane of the organs of vision.

For newborns, the application scheme is very simple - drops are administered immediately after birth, 2 in each eye, and then the procedure is repeated after 2-3 hours. Subsequently, without special indications, the remedy is not used until the child reaches the age of 1 year.
