Due to the fact that fungi of the genus Candida (especially Candida Albicans) are sensitive to it, Pimafucin is used with considerable success for thrush. In addition, the drug is active against many other yeast-like fungi (torulopsis and rhodotorula species) and mold forms (aspergillus and representatives of penicillin fungi). It is considered effective in the treatment of diseases caused by certain dermatophytes (fungi "lovers" of the skin), for example, trichophyton, microsporum and epidermophyton.

Efficiency

Pimafucin is a drug with antifungal activity from the group of antimicrobial agents - macrolides. This is the trade name of the active substance Natamycin. Pimafucin is produced by an Italian pharmaceutical company, which is the reason for the rather high price of the drug.

This remedy is highly effective against yeast fungi of the genus Candida, which cause various forms of candidiasis, including genital lesions or thrush. Therefore, the drug is very often prescribed for the treatment of candidiasis. It can also be prescribed for the treatment of a fungal infection of a different type (not candidal), but with a lower therapeutic effect.

The advantages of Pimafucin in the treatment of candidal inflammation over other drugs from the group of antifungal agents:

• there is no development of fungal resistance to the drug during therapy;
• causes complete death of the pathogen;
• shows a high result in terms of complete cure;
• low toxicity of the drug (general effect on body systems);
• minimal amount side effects and the rarity of their development;
• can be used in pregnant and lactating women, small children under 12 years old;
• does not penetrate into the general circulation when applied topically;
• is in all dosage forms, except for the solution (tablets, cream, suppositories);
• can be used in women and men;
• a small number of contraindications for use.

Relative high cost (from 230 to 800 rubles, depending on the form of release and dosage) is the only negative quality of the drug, which does not allow its use more widely.

Only a doctor should prescribe therapy for thrush and another type of candidal infection with Pimafucin. You can address the problem to a gynecologist, urologist, dermatovenereologist or otorhinolaryngologist if there is a lesion of the oral cavity.

Indications for use

Pimafucin is used to treat inflammatory processes caused by yeast or yeast-like fungi. Most often used in the treatment of candidiasis with lesions:

• organs of the genitourinary system in women and men (labia, vagina, urethra, glans penis and foreskin);
• skin, its folds and skin derivatives ( hair follicles, nails and periungual bed);
• ENT organs (tongue, lips, gums, pharynx, larynx, tonsils, sinuses, ears);
• digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine).

Acute, newly diagnosed form of pathology of any of the above localizations.

Diseases that arose against the background of taking antibacterial, hormonal and chemotherapeutic drugs.

Before and after surgical interventions on the genitals, intestines, esophagus, stomach in order to prepare, prevent and treat candidal infections.

When therapy should be carried out during the period of bearing a child or during breastfeeding.

If there is a violation of the liver and kidneys against the background of their chronic disease with a decrease in organ function (high levels of bilirubin and creatinine in blood samples).

Pimafucin is the main drug in the treatment of fungal inflammation of the intestine, as the only drug to which there is no resistance of the yeast flora (unlike Nystatin) and there are no common systemic manifestations (like Fluconazole and Itraconazole).

When Pimafucin should not be used

A feature of Pimafucin is the almost complete absence of contraindications for use. The drug can not be used if there is an individual allergic reaction, high sensitivity or intolerance:

• Natamycin - for all forms of medicine;
• starch, lactose, povidone, sucrose, bee products, talc, kaolin - for the tablet version of Pimafucin;
• polysorbate, adipic acid, sodium bicarbonate, cetyl alcohol - for vaginal suppositories.

Mechanism of drug action

The active substance Pimafucin blocks sterols - the main active elements of the fungal wall. This leads to disruption of their function of the exchange of nutrients with external environment. The integrity of the cells of the pathogen is broken, and the microorganisms quickly die.

When Natamycin is applied to the skin and mucous membranes, the drug penetrates well into the inner layers, affecting all parts of the fungal colony, but is not absorbed into the blood vessels. Therefore, the drug does not affect the liver and kidneys.

When taking the tablet form of Pimafucin, it active substance 85-90% is excreted from the intestine with feces - absorption into the systemic circulation is minimal.

There are no data on the resistance of the fungal infection to the drug in clinical use. The drug always gives a good result in the treatment of candidiasis. It can be used for relapses of the disease an unlimited number of times, taking a break for 2-3 weeks.

When the symptoms of the pathology completely disappear during therapy, continue treatment for another 2-3 days.

In the treatment of a recurrent form of candidal lesions, a break in treatment should be at least one week.

Possible adverse effects

Negative effects during Pimafucin therapy are extremely rare - the drug is well tolerated by more than 95% of patients. All effects, with the exception of a severe allergic reaction (individual intolerance), do not require discontinuation of treatment and disappear on their own within a few days.

Application features

• In the case of treatment of a recurrent or chronic form of candidal infection, local therapy (suppositories, cream) must be supplemented with a tablet form of the drug in order to achieve a complete cure.
• If during the therapeutic course of Pimafucin menstruation begins, the treatment should be interrupted and the course should be started again after the end of the blood discharge.
• In the process of treating the genital form of candidiasis, you can continue to have sex, but use condoms.
• Be sure to examine your partner and, if a fungal infection is detected, treat it synchronously to avoid re-infection with candidiasis.
• Natamycin can be combined with other medicines with antifungal action - there will be no decrease in the effectiveness of therapy.
• Pimafucin is approved for use with reduced liver function.
